DIY Camera Slider by DryLin Friday 18 February, 2011

Today I have been working on my camera slider to get ready to this weekend’s 12 Hours of Santos mountain biking event. I love the look and feel of a good slider but didn’t like the cost of most slider. They range anywhere between $500 and $1,500 for a nice slider for DSLR cameras. I don’t have that kind of money just for a slider so I went searching around the internets and found a pretty nice and simple slider by Drylin.

So I ordered it off of Amazon for $170 and figured out how to mount it to my $80 tripod. First I had to find the right length bolt so it could go through the rail but not too high to hit the slider. That was pretty easy:

Then I had to find another bolt that fit the size of the tripod head threads and that wasn’t too long. Unfortunately there weren’t any short ones so I had to use 3 big washers to help compensate:

And then the last step was to just assemble all the pieces together and done!

Unfortunately my cheap tripod is not too good at handling the weight of the camera on the slider so when I slide from one side to the other it bends a good bit. It kind of gives an arch feel to the video, which I don’t want. So it might be time to upgrade tripods soon. But in the mean time, maybe my 2 old monopods might help stabilize the ends? Until then, it should do the job for this weekends mountain biking event. Can’t wait to get this thing out for a test run!
